PR: 2009 Downtown Sundown Concert Series Announcement

Release Date: Thursday, May 7th 2009

WILMINGTON, NC – Wilmington Downtown, Inc. announces the 4th installment of the Wilmington Downtown Sundown Concert Series (dates listed below). In addition, the 2009 series is made possible through partnerships with the radio stations of Sea-Comm Media, the Penguin 106.7 & the Bone 103.7, and our local Budweiser affiliate R.A. Jeffreys.  This event, modeled after the successful "Alive After 5" series in Charlotte, NC, will feature local and regional bands every Friday night from May 22nd until August 14, 2009 for a summer long event. The concerts will be held at Riverfront Park on Water Street, between Market St. & Princess St., from 5:00p.m. until 10:00pm.

“This concert series is special because of its unique venue and location, watching the sunset behind the Battleship is the perfect way to kick off your weekend,” said John Hinnant, Executive Director for Wilmington Downtown, Inc. The concert series reaffirms downtown Wilmington as the premier destination for young professionals, business people, and families alike. It is timed for people to head downtown – or stay downtown – right after work.  Wilmington Downtown began efforts to bring downtown a summer concert series based on recommendations from the Vision 2020 Plan. Cities such as Charleston, Raleigh, and Charlotte have seen these concert series bring (and keep) businesspeople to the downtown area after 5 p.m.  Hinnant points out that, “This concert series ties the gap between the professional daytime workforce and the vibrant restaurant and nightlife that Wilmington has become known for.” The concerts will take place in a cordoned-off area in front of the Courthouse in Riverfront Park.  Admission is free and food, wine, and beer will be available for sale within the event area. All proceeds will benefit Wilmington Downtown, Inc. to aid in the continuation of achieving the goals outlined in our mission statement, as well as working towards the initiatives of the Vision 2020 plan.
Wilmington Downtown, Inc. is a nonprofit organization advocating planned economic growth and development in the downtown Wilmington area. Since 1977, it has served as a vehicle for community improvement and a voice for downtown businesses, residents and tourists.
